The building blocks of Sea Life

It's been long, hard, challenging and exciting, senior marine curator Chris Spaulding said, standing besidetemporary pools set up under giant tents behind Legoland.

According to Spaulding, there are three principal ways to obtaindisplay fish and other marine creatures:

First and preferred method is surplus from other aquariums. Likezoos and baseball teams, aquariums regularly trade what they havetoo much of for what they want or need. Often, the deal is done fora fish to be named later.

For example, we may get two breeding rays from anotheraquarium, with the promise that we'll give them a female in thefuture,” Spaulding said.

Second is aquaculture: Fish and other organisms purchased fromcommercial enterprises that raise them for sale. Sea horses, coraland small tropical fish are often obtained this way.

Invista launches recycled Coolmax

WILMINGTON [22.08.08] Invista introduced a new recycled versionof its Coolmax polyester fibre at the recent Outdoor Retailer showin Salt Lake City, where US legwear brands DeFeet and Injini bothlaunched socks with the new Coolmax EcoTech fibre.

Invista says this new Coolmax EcoTech fibre has been underdevelopment since May 2007 and is derived from post-consumerbottles made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which are thencleaned and converted into polymer flakes. These flakes are thenconverted into polymer chips, melted and extruded into polyesterfibre that can then be spun into yarn.

"Both Coolmax EcoTech and the current Coolmax fabrics aremade with the unique 4-channel cross section for high-performancepermanent moisture movement," said Invista. "Tests forabsorbency, wicking, hand, dyeability, and abrasion resistanceshowed Coolmax EcoTech fibres to be equivalent to existingCoolmax fabric standards."

Invista also says that the new recycled version of Coolmax alsogoes one step further, with demonstrated superior results overcurrent Coolmax fabrics when tested for whiteness and pilling.

Shane Cooper, the founder of technical sock brand DeFeet said,"We care deeply about the environment, and we are so excitedto see this great brand expanding its product line to includeCoolmax EcoTech fibre from recycled materials. What a phenomenaluse for plastic bottles!"

AWS installs Buhler sorter

AWS installs Buhler sorter

07/08/2008

By Katie Coyne

Swiss firm"s product chosen for its Soutstanding result.

7 August 2008 – UK based mixed plastics recycler AWSE coplastics is installing a Buhler Sortex Z+4 sorter at itsHemswell, Lincolnshire bottle sorting and processing plant.

The optical sorter removes contaminiants such as metal, glass, wood, paper and rubber from materials that include PVC, PET, HDPE,LDPE, PVB and PP.

AWS said it trialled three sorters including the Buhler machine andthe sample submitted was contaminated to a “higherdegree” than would be experienced in normal use.

Buhler sells process engineering equipment, especially technologyfor producing foods and engineering materials globally.

AWS md, Jonathan Short, said the purchase was triggered by arequirement to sort PET flakes to food grade plastic recyclingstandards.

He said that the Swiss firm’s sorter produced an“outstanding result” in four hours and“demonstrated a complete understanding of ourobjectives”.

Short added: “The most important consideration from my pointof view was performance. Standards for UK food packaging productionare exceptionally rigorous and value overrides price. Having saidthat, I am happy that all the numbers felt right.”

Buhler said its Sortex Z+4 sorter is able to identify and rejectrogue coloured flakes and all foreign material is unmatched.

A mobile solution for disabled pets

Hundreds of disabled pets can thank Buddha for their new lease onlife - a wheelchair for handicapped animals. Buddha the dog, thatis. The 10-year-old blue Doberman, who suffered from spinaldegeneration and disc disease, was the inspiration for Eddie'sWheels For Pets, a Shelburne Falls business that designs andconstructs wheelchairs for canines and other animals.

Leslie Grinnell, president of Eddie's Wheels, remembers the daywhen Buddha suddenly was unable to walk, dragging her back legsacross the kitchen floor. Since back surgery wasn't an option,Leslie and Eddie Grinnell carried their beloved dog around in afirewood sling, massaging her legs at night, and scrambling hereggs for breakfast. They discussed euthanasia, but Leslie swearsthat Buddha barked in protest as she lay by the woodstove. So herhusband, Eddie, a field engineer at the time, put together amakeshift cart, using the wheels from his daughter's red wagon, padding the harness with plumbing insulation.

"We put the cart on her, and she turned around, and looked at thewheels, as if saying, 'You don't expect me to walk in this, doyou?"' remembers Leslie. But she did walk, and not just walk, butfrolic in the woods, wade in the river, and play with other dogsand all while attached to a metal frame that hung on her shouldersand supported her pelvic floor. It was a pet wheelchair, an unusualsight in 1989.

Veterinarian: Socialization helps prevent dog bites

you are a parent, it is your responsibility to make sure your childknows how to behave around pets he or she does and does not know. This includes knowing what to do if approached by a strange dogwhile on a bike or on a walk. If you are not familiar with how toteach your child normal and protective animal behaviors you shouldcontact your local animal shelter or veterinarian for references.

You can also visit www.doggonesafe.com for pictures and activitiesthat teach your child about being safe around pets. One of the mostimportant rules to teach your child is to never approach a dog heor she does not know unless the owner is present and he or she asksthe owner first. I

f you are a parent and a pet owner, never leave your child and petalone together. Make sure all interactions are supervised. Thereare special guidelines in teaching your pet how to accept a newchild in the home. These can be found on the doggonesafe Web siteas well.

If you are a teacher, you too can play a role in preventing dogbites by hosting education seminars. A great resource would be yourlocal veterinarian, humane officer or the HSUS Web site(www.hsus.org). We as veterinarians, humane societies and local petshelters also play important roles in educating the public and petowners about dog bite prevention. We need to do more to ensure bothpet owners and the general public are well informed. This can bedone through spending more time discussing pet behavioral issuesduring visits and by giving presentations to local schools.

The flea days of summer

The flea days of summer

Published: Wednesday, August 27, 2008 10:15 AM CDT

Summer is now in full swing and so is the war against the tiny, wingless, blood-eating fleas that make our pets miserable duringthese hot, humid days.

The flea, while extremely annoying to both pets and humans, isactually quite a fascinating insect. According to Dr. Allan Paul, aveterinary parasitologist at the University of Illinois College ofVeterinary Medicine in Urbana, the life cycle of the flea isdivided into several stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Theflea's body is flattened slightly to allow it to move between thecoarse fur of a cat or dog with ease. The long, specially adaptedlegs of a flea allow it to jump up to 200 times its own bodylength, making it the best jumper in the animal kingdom.

Adult fleas will spend the majority of their lives on a host animalif they are able to find one. Once on the host, an adult femaleflea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, or about 2,000 eggs in alifetime. These eggs will then fall off the animal and hatch intolarvae within a few days.

Dr. Paul explains that these larvae will then develop in theenvironment, thriving in warm, moist, dark places like underfurniture, decks, and yard waste. Within seven to 10 days the flealarvae will form a cocoon, entering the pupa state. With the properconditions, the pupa will develop into adults within one to twoweeks.

Flake: Tame the rising veterinary costs

pets. They provide policies for both routine care and emergencysituations. Their Web site is www.petinsurance.com.

In addition to pet insurance, find out what kind of payment planyour veterinarian may offer. As the cost of financing has risen, most veterinary clinics have partnered with financial institutionsto provide those services. One such company is Care Credit. Theyoffer interest free or low interest payment plans. Their Web siteis www.carecredit.com. You will notice from their site they are notveterinary exclusive but are accepted by some human health care providers.

One other method to make veterinary care affordable is to considersetting up a separate bank account to force you to save for yourpet's needs. In addition, some veterinary clinics are able to allowyou to pre-pay for your pet's services. Finally, don't skip onpreventative care. The age-old expression "an ounce of preventionis worth a pound of cure" is still very true. Be sure to protectyour pet against the diseases prominent in your area, feed goodquality food as recommended by your veterinarian, be sure your petis well exercised, and follow your veterinarian's advice. Providingroutine care such as regular veterinary check-ups, routine dentalcare and screening blood work may save you in the long run.

For more information about keeping veterinary health careaffordable, visit www.myvnn.com, search words "Saving money" and"Pet bills."

New on CD: Solange, Matthew Sweet, Slipknot

The biggest weakness that has plagued R&B since the ascendance ofhip-hop: the absence of melodies as distinctive as the rhythms andvocals. The first single, "I Decided, Pt. 1," is a case in point:It's set to a finger-snapping Motown beat, but the two-chord changejust gets old, instead of old-school. When there's a hook to hang ahat on, as on "Sandcastle Disco," the results can be charming, andeven some lesser tracks, like the Muscle Shoals-leaning "T.O.N.Y."survive via the lost art of storytelling.

Most welcome are moments that look beyond past and present. "CosmicJourney," a lovely, space-age love song with Bilal, is a twinklingMilky Way away from Solange's sister, and finds her inhabiting herown galaxy at last.

Good pair of gloves helps keep workers' hands safe

Prior to present day, work gloves were stuck in the dark ages -- nodexterity or breathability and little in the way of protection or comfort.

Work gloves are great tools when working with vibration equipment, power tools, impact tools or doing carpentry where your hands couldbe at risk. In NASCAR, over-the-wall pit crew members also knowjust how important of a role gloves play, especially when everysecond counts during a pit stop.

There's a critical connection between you and your tools. Your workgloves are no exception. They should combine protection withperformance and sacrifice neither.

As anyone who works with their hands knows, getting burned -- orscratched, scalded, greased or calloused -- makes it much harder tobe on your game at work. That's why choosing the right work gloveis so important.

Putting Prisoners To Work

For entrepreneurs, the benefits to prison labor can be significant. While federal law demands that companies pay minimum wage (or atleast as much as counterparts in the private sector), they can save considerably on health care costs, payroll taxes, turnover lossesand vacation time.

The big downside: lack of process control. The entire prison couldgo on lockdown, effectively halting production; or prison guardscould suddenly swoop in and search an entire manufacturingfacility, disrupting output.

Then there's the whiff of moral turpitude. Some critics argue thathiring prisoners hearkens back to the Reconstruction age, wheninmates were used as a substitute for slave labor.

"Anything that creates a market incentive to lock people upundermines the very purpose of our criminal justice system," saysSheila Bedy, executive director of the Justice Policy Institute, aWashington DC-based prison research foundation.

Garden glove review: Foxgloves Ergonomic

Thank goodness manufacturers have figured out that there is more togarden gloves than just something to cover your hands. In recent years, more styles in a variety of fabrics have become available. Some are even especially-designed for women's hands and to appealto the feminine sense of style. It's enough to make the bare-handdirt digger a garden gloves convert.

Foxgloves were among the first of this new generation of gardengloves to appear at my local garden center. I promptly bought thenin a shade of brown that I now learn is called "compost."

Description:

Foxgloves are made from comfortable, snug-fitting SUPPLEX®nylon and LYCRA® elastane, which on the hands feels like a nicepair of support hose. Because they are stretchy, they are easy toput on and take off. They allow for maximum dexterity. In someways, it doesn't feel like you're wearing a glove at all.

Glass Companies Talk About the Importance of a Safe WorkEnvironment

A safe work place is critical for any manufacturing or productionenvironment, but especially so when working with a material such asglass that can itself cause injury and even death. Even when glass companies take all the necessary precautions and follow strictsafety procedures accidents can and do sometimes happen. That’s why it’s so critical to make sure not only thesafety procedures are in place, but also that employees are awareof them and abide by them.

Coastal Glass Distributors in Charleston, S.C., for example, has asafety manager who, along with a group of other managers andfront-line personnel, form the company’s safety council.

Our focus is on making sure we have a good understanding ofthe safety requirements for each job and training new employees towork safely,” says Jack Hoey, president. “We haveweekly safety meetings with all our shop floor departments to keepsafe practices at the front of our employees' minds. We prepare awritten analysis of every safety incident, no matter how seeminglysmall, so we can identify opportunities to improve safetyfurther.”

Doctor writes a guidebook for pregnant working women

Many were immediately asked if they were coming back after thebirth, and some were second-guessed about their ability to do theirwork while pregnant.

"Most employers don't want the [perceived] liability," Greenfieldsaid.

Three of Greenfield's patients who are in the book have divergent professional backgrounds, but all faced struggles at work.

When Jennifer Taylor was pregnant several years ago and working asa physician's assistant and medical secretary, she made sure totake extra precautions, not only to ease her mind but also to easethe minds of the people with whom she worked.

"I used more protective gear," said Taylor, who now works as aclerical specialist for the Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Department ofChildren and Family Services. "I would double up on gloves. Ialways wore a facemask. If I was drawing blood, I would always weareye goggles."

Taylor said she wishes that she would have taken more time off withher first child. She went back after six weeks and then dropped herschedule to part time.

Oz Collection LLC

recently opened a location on Hurstbourne Parkway, its second inless than two years. Fair warning: clicking your heels three timeswon’t get you to either one. But owner Rob Marcum said the1939 film was indeed the motivation for the name of the gallery. He’s always like “The Wizard of Oz,” Marcum said.“I think it has a lot to teach children.” The newlocation, at 2103 S. Hurstbourne Parkway, will be home to thegallery’s new interior design division. The first location,at 12613 Taylorsville Road, in Tyler Center near the Gene SnyderFreeway, opened in January 2007. About six months later, thegallery was expanded and the 5,700-square-foot outlet now serves asretail space for Oz’s eclectic collection of art — bigand small. Artwork is purchased for the store from local andnational artists. Merchandise ranges from oversized paintings andmirrors to metal art, fountains, bronze statues and a variety ofother items. Oz also has a graphic design department offeringservices that include the digital transfer of photographs tocanvas, making them resemble paintings. Prices also vary widely— an oil lamp can be purchased for $48, but the 9-foot-tallTyrannosaurus Rex made from recycled metal will cost you nearly$5,000. A few items, such as some bronze statues and originalpaintings, can cost up to $15,000, said Terri Miller, director ofthe gallery. Abby Bell, who leads the corporate sales and interiordesign division, said the diverse collection helps her match itemswith clients’ decor and tastes. “This is adesigner’s dream,” she said. “It’s verydifficult to find fabulous artwork.” With the new division,Oz intends to target owners of high-end homes and corporateclients, such as banks, hotels and doctors offices, Bell and Millersaid. Bell previously served as a designer for Interior MarketplaceLLC, on Frankfort Avenue. She also has worked for Burdorf’s,Cherry House Inc. and once had her own firm. GRAPHIC NOVELS

Explainers

, the first of four volumes that will collect the strip, covers itsfirst decade. Feiffer spent a few months nailing down the look hewanted (figures built out of disjointed, wobbly lines drawn withsharpened wooden dowels), but before long he had worked out hisfavorite gags: a couple doing a pas de deux of emotional abuse, arepresentative of what the cartoonist called the "RadicalMiddle" resolutely failing to take a stand, a yam-facedpolitician summarizing the government's position in a frenzy ofdoubletalk. The only two real regulars are Bernard Mergendeiler, anebbishy wannabe hipster who's slowly becoming a prototypical Manin a Gray Flannel Suit, and his acquaintance Huey, a callowmeathead whose boorish self-assurance makes him irresistible towomen.

A lot of Feiffer's topical humor has lost its sting, although it'sstill an amusing barometer of bohemian America's concerns in the'50s and '60s (it's particularly fun to see

John F. Kennedy

satirized from the left). He's more enduringly witty when hechannels the voices of little kids caught in the baffling stream ofmodernity, and his swipes at the way women and men treat each other(which evolved into his "Carnal Knowledge" screenplay)are still scathing. In one strip, a man catalogues his date'sbeauty and wit while she winces at his touch and silently refuteshim, point by point. "I love

The Journal

that BA has scrutinized the proposal and has concluded that itcalls for an aircraft that can haul more fuel than the plan BAoriginally bid.

Some sources close to the process have noted (to other mediaoutlets, including

My is full of phone hang-ups

My is full of phone hang-UPS

NYONE who doubts the phone is now God hasn't been to Telstra's newT[life] shop. This pretentiously named megastore, on the corner ofBourke and Swanston streets, is so white and high-tech, so spaciousand surreal, that it might be a nightclub or a spaceship or somefunky modern church.

There are white leather stools; free bottles of water and mobilephones laid out alluringly on long benches. Signs invite us to pickup a mobile and watch TV on it, or catch a movie preview or finddirections. Or we can just head straight to nirvana (the iPhone)and take in its array of options: from sharemarket news, acalculator and YouTube to maps, email and iPod.

It's fun for a while, hanging around watching YouTube clips, untilyou start trying to decipher the typical payment plan. Spend muchlonger contemplating so many phone models and billing deals and allthose screens, sounds and sheer possibilities can be brain-numbing.

The T[life] store is the latest, most grandiose manifestation ofour love affair with the techno-gadget. Author Douglas Coupland hasobserved that our very perception of time is now measured in techwaves rather than calendar years. He recently bumped into an oldworkmate and the pair had the following exchange: "I haven't seenyou since … eBay!" "I haven't seen you since … Google!""I haven't seen you since … BlackBerrys!"

Now, in the iPhone epoch, the mode of content delivery can seemmore important than the actual content. The gadget itself, and thepossibilities it contains, are celebrated as a form of creativeexpression. What you do with it is another matter.

Things are moving so fast that it becomes daunting if you fallbehind in the race. (But whose race is it? And how did I enter it?)

Recently I became hopelessly flustered when I received a videomessage on my mobile and realised I didn't know how to open it. Ipressed some buttons, got lost, managed to find my way back to myinbox and gave up. Needless to say, I don't have an iPhone.

Rattner sees man-machine mash-ups by 2050

Rattner sees man-machine mash-UPS by 2050

Intel's chief technology officer Justin Rattner

stated that man and machine will live together in peace andharmony by 2050, in a keynote speech during the Intel developerforum (IDF).

Not only that, he also speculated 'that we may be approaching aninflection point where the rate of technology advancements isaccelerating at an exponential rate, and machines could evenovertake humans in their ability to reason, in the not so distantfuture.' So much for the human race, as anything smarter than homosapiens will certainly put an end to mankind's irrationalexuberances. He put a robot hand on display which can sense humansand its surroundings using an electric field, the way fish do it.An autonomous cleaning robot was also shown.

Rattner also demonstrated wireless resonant energy link (WREL),which is being researched at Intel. He showed off a light bulblighting up with no cord attached. WREL sends power using coupledresonators, which send and receive energy using a naturalfrequency. Some day in the future, just holding a notebook with areceive resonator close to a transmit resonator will recharge itsbatteries. Intel wants products running on wireless power. Nowimagine reasoning robots walking around in 2050 with no batteryproblems - that sounds more like a threat than a promise.

But things get even better - Intel is researching so-called catoms, which are horribly small miniature robots. These little blighterswill be able to change the shape of a gadget. A laptop may beshrunk to the size of something that will fit in jacket pocket, take on the design of a phone if you're using it to chat up a dateand will morph into regular, keyboard-equipped notebook when youneed it. The boffin responsible for Emerging Materialsmarchitecture at Intel explained a new way to make siliconhemispheres by means of photolithography, which is a prerequisitefor making catoms. Photolithography is a process used to makechips. Dr. Garner added Intel is looking how to make 3Dtransistors, instead of bog-standard planar transistors which makeup a chip. He also claimed Intel is looking beyond silicon andCMOS.

Wildcats experience some ups and downs

For example, in the scripted portion of the scrimmage -- with eachfirst-team offense getting 15 plays -- St. James startingquarterback Marcus Dumas threw three interceptions.

Meanwhile, Helen Coxs first-team offense put together a nine-play,70-yard drive capped with a 4-yard touchdown run by Darius Carey.

But once the teams got into a regulation, 12-minute quarter, it wasSt. James defense forcing three turnovers en route to a 14-6Wildcat lead at the end of the quarter.

During the quarter, St. James gained 92 yards (70 rushing, 28passing). Helen Cox totaled 102 yards (60 rushing, 62 passing).

"We figured out that we have to pick up our tempo," St. James coachRick Gaille said of the shift in momentum. "We just cant(lollygag) around and go slow before the play, and slow to thehuddle and slow to get to the line of scrimmage.

"That was the biggest difference. We picked up our tempo, likewere supposed to."

The regulation quarter started with Helen Cox taking a possessionat its own 40-yard line. The Cougars drove to the Wildcats UPS 23before Dumas intercepted Careys pass.

Dumas then directed a six-play, 67-yard drive capped by RomelSteibs 18-yard touchdown run up the middle. Jaleel Steibs extrapoint made it 7-0 with 6:39 left in the quarter.

UPS said to be near buying European delivery service

The Times said UPS would pay 34 euros to 38 euros per share, thoughthe paper did not cite a source. That would mean a bid in the rangeof $19 billion to $21.3 billion.

But on-again, off-again rumors have persisted for years that UPS orits chief rival, Memphis-based FedEx, was on the verge of buyingTNT. It’s unclear whether the latest flare-up is real orinvestor speculation intended to trigger a TNT stock rally.

Sandy Springs-based UPS had little official comment. “UPS will never discuss rumors and speculation about mergers oracquisitions,” spokesman Norman Black said.

If it came to pass, the acquisition would be the company’slargest by far.

Recent news reports have been varied.

In July, The Financial Times reported FedEx had the deal tied up,giving TNT’s stock its biggest boost since the company wentpublic in 1998.

Then in early August, European news agencies said that UPS wouldbid more than $15 billion for TNT.

UPS controls about 10 percent of the European express business andbuying TNT would add about 15 percent, according Satish Jindel, president of SJ Consulting in Pittsburgh. It would also make UPSthe No. 1 express carrier in Europe; German-owned DHL is first with22 percent of the market.
